Tennis | Tips to sidestep injury on court this summer

Ace your next social tennis match with these injury prevention tips

Tennis -- a low-impact, individual sport -- is a smash across all ages and abilities throughout Australia. Whether you compete at a club or join a friend for an afternoon game at your local park or sports centre, it is one of the country’s top ten activities. Plus, when a Grand Slam like the Australian Open is broadcast on TV, Aussies love to hit the courts too. So, if you’re inspired to play tennis this summer, here’s our advice on how to reduce your risk of injury as you play.

Common tennis injuries

Tennis is a low-impact sport that can increase your fitness, strength and flexibility. However, repetitive stroke-playing can contribute to possible injury due to overuse. Some of the most common complaints include:

  • Tennis elbow, golfers elbow, and wrist injuries

  • Shoulder pain

  • Muscle strains

  • Sprained ankle

How to avoid injuries

Whether you are a social player or a regular competitor, you can reduce your risk of injury by looking after your body before, during and after a tennis game. For example:

  • Warm up properly. Spend ten minutes getting your body ready for tennis’ aerobic workout with a slow jog, jumping jacks and a series of stretches.

  • Avoid playing with existing injuries.

  • Use correct stroke technique when you play. If you haven’t played before or for many years, check out this video from Tennis Australia for advice.

  • Play with a partner at your ability level.

  • Consider the court conditions before you play. If it’s a hot summer’s day, postpone your match until the day cools. Or if it’s been raining, play when the surface has dried and no longer slippery.

  • Maintain a healthy fitness routine comprising other low-impact sports (like swimming or cycling) to protect your limbs from overuse.
